     Merritt Gritton was born circa 1838 at Kentucky.1 He was the son of Hogeland Gritton and Martha Elizabeth Riley.1

During the Civil War, Merritt Gritton served as a Private in Company D, 11th Regiment of the Kentucky Cavalry (US). He was enrolled on 18 August 1861 and mustered in as a Private on Oct. 9, 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson for a period of three years.2,3,4

Merritt Gritton served in KY 11th Cav Co. D, died in the Civil War.1

Merritt Gritton married Sarah Jane Hannah Yeager on 16 July 1863 at Washington Co., Kentucky.1,5 Merritt Gritton was captured on 14 November 1863 Marysville, Blount Co., Tennessee. He was held at Andersonville prison (Code No. 11841). He died of diarrhea while a prisoner of war and is buried in grave number 1841 at Andersonville.2,3
