During the Civil War, George Gritton served as a Private in Company D, 11th Regiment of the Kentucky Cavalry (US). He was enrolled on 19 July 1862 and mustered in as a Private on Sep. 22, 1862 at Louisville, Ky for three years.3,4,5 He was captured on 14 November 1863 Marysville, Blount Co., Tennessee. He was held at Andersonville prison (Code No. 11612). He died of diarrhea while a prisoner of war and is buried in grave number 1612 at Andersonville.3,4
