He was honorably discharged by reason of expiration term of service on 13 March 1935. When enlisted, he was 20 years of age and a student. He reenlisted as a Corporal, Company G, 168th Infantry, Iowa National Guard on 14 March 1935 at Centerville, Iowa. When he enlisted he was described as 24 years of age and a truck driver. He had blue eyes, black hair, dark complexion and was five feet eleven inches in height.

He was appointed as a First Lieutenant by the Governor of the State of Iowa on 15 July 1942. He was appointed Captain in the service of the Iowa State Guard on 20 May 1946.⁸
