     Reference: 1344. Martha Jane Gale was born on 7 October 1826 at Posey Co., Indiana.2 She was the daughter of William Gale and Rebecca Elizabeth Jones. Conflicting evidence states that Martha Jane Gale married Jackson Smith Hockersmith at Davis Co., Iowa, on 10 January 1847.1,3,4,2

Martha Jane Gale was enumerated with Jackson Smith Hockersmith as Martha J. Hockersmith on the Census of 26 September 1850 at Fox Township, Davis Co., Iowa. She is shown as age 23 and born in Iowa.5

Martha Jane Hockersmith obtained a land patent on 14 December 1866 at Lane Co., Oregon; obtained 287 acres.6

Martha Jane Hockersmith died on 19 March 1903 at Griffin Creek, Jackson Co., Oregon, at age 76 years, 5 months and 12 days.7,2 She was buried at Phoenix Cemetery, Phoenix, Jackson Co., Oregon, 42.276239~-122.8208699.8

    --Mrs. M. J. Hockersmith, relict of the late Jackson Hockersmith, died at the home of her son-in-law, A. P. Weiss, on Griffin creek, on Thursday evening, March 12th. Mrs. Hockersmith was a pioneer of Oregon, having come from Illinois in 1853, settling in the Willamette Valley and removing to Jackson County in 1867. Six children survive her--Mrs. A. P. Weiss, of Griffin creek; Mrs. H. H. Taylor, of Roxy; Mrs. Sadie Van Tine, of Tenino, Wash.; John N. Hockersmith, of Medford; Jos. W. Hockersmith, of California.
    The interment took place in the Phoenix cemetery, Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of the 1st Spiritual Society of Southern Oregon, of which the deceased was a member.
