     Jackson Smith Hockersmith was born on 10 July 1818 at Estill Co., Kentucky.1,2,3 He was the son of Jacob Hockersmith , Jr. and Anna Kiziah Skinner.

Jackson Hockersmith married Martha Jane Gale, daughter of William Gale and Rebecca Elizabeth Jones, on 9 January 1847 at Davis Co., Iowa, when he was 28.4

     Jackson Hockersmith bought purchased 160 acres at Fox River Township, Davis Co., Iowa, on 22 December 1848. The deed was witnessed by an unknown person .5

Jackson Smith Hockersmith is head of household on the Census of 26 September 1850 at Fox Township, Davis Co., Iowa. He is shown as age 31 and born in Kentucky. He owned real property worth $600. Also enumerated were Martha Jane Gale, Joseph William Hockersmith and John Newton Hockersmith.6

Mary Emily Weiss, Rebecca E. Fountain and Florence Isadora Taylor was/were named as Jackson Smith Hockersmith's daughter in Jackson Smith's obituary.7

    DEATH OF JACKSON HOCKERSMITH.

    Jackson Hockersmith died at his home in Ashland Sunday March 28, 1897. He
    had been confined to his home for the past three or four months of a severe
    attack of jaundice and three weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis
    which left him in a critical condition and this coupled with his advanced
    age precluded his recovery and he passed away. He was seventy-eight years,
    eight months and twenty-eight days old.

    Mr. Hockersmith was born in Kentucky and came to Oregon in 1853 and located
    in Jackson County in 1865 and has resided here ever since. Besides the
    widow who survives him Mr. Hockersmith leaves two sons living, J. N.
    Hockersmith, of Ashland, and J. W. Hockersmith, of Sonora County, Calif.,
    and four married daughters, Mrs. Geo. Van Tine, of Tenino, Wash., Mrs. A.
    P. Weiss, of Ashland, Mrs. Henry Taylor, of Medford, and Mrs. P. L.
    Fountain, of Klamath county.

    The funeral took place at the Phoenix cemetery by the Predestcherian
    Baptist Church, of which he has been a member for 60 years.
