John Gritton was born in Winchester, Virginia in 1755 About 1770, the family moved to Westmorland County, Pennsylvania on the Youghigheny River. The Youghigheny is a natural highway, twisting through mountains and rolling hills to join with the Allegheny and Monongahela to make up the Ohio River.
In May 1775 John enlisted in the Revolutionary Army.
In April 1780 he sailed down the Ohio to the Kentucky Falls, to the area which later became a part of Mercer County. He continued to serve with the army until 1782. He and his wife, Elizabeth remained in that place untilElizabeth's death, C/A 1820-1830, Mercer County Kentucky. After 17 Aug 1837. Source Censuses of 1820-1830 . Her maiden name may have been Hogeland or Hoagland. They lived in Fayette Co. Pa. and Mercer Co. Ky.
John is buried in the DeMott or Banta Family graveyard on a farm at Cove Springs, Ky.
