The deceased was born in Kentucky March 16, 1827. When a child his parents moved to Indiana. At the age of 21 he was married to America Lane and to this union 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls, were born. In 1884 he moved to Kansas, living here until his death. Mr. Ashby united with the Christian church 24 years ago and was a faithful member. His health has been failing for two years and he always bore his suffering patiently. Last Friday night, realizing that the end was near, he remarked that he "was ready to meet his god." A wife and eight children survive him. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. M. J. Duncan, and burial was made in the Kroger cemetery in Talleyrand twp.10
His estate was probated on 2 April 1904 at Fredonia, Wilson Co., Kansas, America Ashby was named as Richard Washington Ashby's surviving spouse. George Washington Ashby, Elizabeth A. Coates, Amanda Johnson, Dennis Ashby, Mary York, Martha Elmira Fortner, Lucinda Powers and James Buchanon Ashby were named as Richard Washington Ashby's surviving children. His will was made at Fredonia, KS 1 Apr. 1903. The will was witnessesd by William York, age 37 and E. L. Johnson, age 44.13
