At the age of 23, January 2, 1864, he enlisted as a private, in Company E, 15th Regiment of Iowa Infantry and served during the Civil War. Height: 5 feet 10 inches; complexion Dark; color of eyes Blue; color of hair Dark; that his ocupation was Farmer; that he was born Feb. 10, 1941 at Danvill, Ohio. On the 24th of July, 1865, he received his honorable discharge at Louisville, Kentucky.
That same year he came to Iowa. In 1861 he married to Tobitha Ellis, May 23. To this union were born six children, five sons and a daughter. Three sons, William of Keosaugua, Elias of Reamsville, Kansas, Lewis of Keosaugua, and the daughter Mrs. C. W. Githens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, survive. His wife died July 11, 1893. Two sons died several years ago. He was again married on October 16, 1894 to Mary E. Godown, who survives him; also one sister, Mrs. Harriet Chaplin of Milton, Iowa. There were nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Apfel of the Methodist Church were held at the home Sunday afternoon, August 7, the few remaining comrades taking part in the ritual ceremony. Burial in Bethel Cemetery near Lebanon.11

OBITUARY OF JOHN M. THOMAS
John M. Thomas was born the 10th of February, 1841, in Indiana, and passed away this life August 6, 1926, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 27 days.
At the age of 23 he enlisted in Co. E, 15th regiment of Iowa Infantry and served during the war. On the 24th of July, 1865, he received his honorable discharge at Louisville, Ky. That same year he came to Iowa. In 1861 he was married to Tobitha [sic] Ellis, May 23. To this union were born six children, five sons and a daughter. Three sons William of Keosauqua, Elias of Reemsville, Kan., Lewis of Keosauqua, and the daughter Mrs. C. W. Githens of Colorado Springs, survive. His wife died July 11, 1893.
