     John Meridith Thomas was born on 10 February 1841 at Danville, Highland Co., Ohio.4 He was the son of Daniel Thomas and Mary Chaplin.3

John Meridith Thomas married Tabitha Ellis, daughter of Elias Ellis and Nancy Gritton, on 23 May 1861 at Appanoose Co., Iowa, when he was 20.5,6,27

John Meridith Thomas was listed as the head of household as John Thomas on the 1870 Census recorded 26 July 1870 at Des Moines Township, Van Buren Co., Iowa. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1870. He is age 29 and a farm laborer with personal property valued at $335. He was born in Ohio. Also living in the household were Tabitha Thomas and William Daniel Thomas.7

John Meridith Thomas was listed as the head of household on the 1880 Census recorded 8 June 1880 at Des Moines Township, Van Buren Co., Iowa. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1880. He is age 38 and a farmer. He was born in Ohio. He cannot read or write. Also living in the household were his wife, Tabitha Thomas, his son, William Daniel Thomas, his son, John Wesley Thomas, his son, Elias Sanford Thomas, his son, George Henry Thomas , his daughter, Samantha Thomas.8

Tabitha Thomas was named as John Meridith Thomas's wife in John Meridith's obituary. Obituary of John M. Thomas: John M. Thomas was born the 10th of February, 1841, in Indiana, and passed away this life August 6, 1926, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 27 days.
     
At the age of 23, January 2, 1864, he enlisted as a private, in Company E, 15th Regiment of Iowa Infantry and served during the Civil War. Height: 5 feet 10 inches; complexion Dark; color of eyes Blue; color of hair Dark; that his ocupation was Farmer; that he was born Feb. 10, 1941 at Danvill, Ohio. On the 24th of July, 1865, he received his honorable discharge at Louisville, Kentucky.
      That same year he came to Iowa. In 1861 he married to Tobitha Ellis, May 23. To this union were born six children, five sons and a daughter. Three sons, William of Keosaugua, Elias of Reamsville, Kansas, Lewis of Keosaugua, and the daughter Mrs. C. W. Githens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, survive. His wife died July 11, 1893. Two sons died several years ago. He was again married on October 16, 1894 to Mary E. Godown, who survives him; also one sister, Mrs. Harriet Chaplin of Milton, Iowa. There were nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Apfel of the Methodist Church were held at the home Sunday afternoon, August 7, the few remaining comrades taking part in the ritual ceremony. Burial in Bethel Cemetery near Lebanon.11

    John M. Thomas was born the 10th of February, 1841, in Indiana, and passed away this life August 6, 1926, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 27 days.
