Elias Ellis
     Elias Ellis was born say 1803 at Kentucky.3,4,2 He was the son of James Ellis and Elizabeth Morrison (?).2 Elias Ellis was born on 30 May 1803 at Mercer Co., Kentucky.5

Elias Ellis was also known as Marcellus Ellis.6

Elias Ellis married Nancy Gritton, daughter of William Gritton and Jenney Jane Lipsey, on 16 March 1824 at Mercer Co., Kentucky.7,8,2,9

Elias Ellis is head of household on the Census of in 1830 at Mercer Co., Kentucky, as Elias Ellis a male age 20 to 30. The household consisted of 1 male under age 5, 1 male age 20 to 30, 2 females under age 5, and 1 female age 20 to 30. No slaves were listed. Rebecca Ellis is the only daughter currently known who could fit the description as a female under age 5. Perhaps one daughter was lost between the 1830 and 1840 census. Also enumerated in that household were perhaps Nancy Ellis, Rebecca Ellis and William Morrison Ellis.10

Elias Ellis and Nancy Ellis sold land in Mercer Co. on Salt River and Chaplin adjoining John Strutton, William Maddox and Evan Brown at Mercer Co., Kentucky, to Bryant Riley on 25 January 1835. There is 183 acres acres in said tract and Ellis and wife have a one-ninth interest in said tract except the dower right of Jane Gritton, widow of William, holds part of tract. Their interest was sold for $15. Acknowledged by Elia Ellis and Nancy Elllis in Harrison Co., Ind. on April 3, 1839 and recorded in Mercer Co., Ky., June 22, 1839.. The deed was witnessed by an unknown person .11

Elias Ellis and Nancy Ellis sold 115 acres of land on Brush and Loglick Creeks adjoining John S. Jones and Peter Demaree at Mercer Co., Kentucky, to John Demaree on 26 September 1835. The deed was witnessed by Austin Cole.12

Elias Ellis and Nancy Gritton resided circa 1836 at Harrison Co., Indiana, The 1850 census shows that his daughter Mary, was born in KY about 1835 and that his son James was born in IN about 1837. This indicates they moved from KY to IN between 1835 and 1837.13

The household consisted of 1 male under age 5, 1 male age 10 to 15, 1 male age 30 to 40, 1 female under age 5, 2 females age 5 to 10, 1 female age 10 to 15, 1 female age 15 to 20 and 1 female age 30 to 40. Also enumerated in that household were perhaps Nancy Gritton, Rebecca Ellis, Mary Ellis, James Ellis, Amanda Ellis, Margaret Ellis and William Morrison Ellis.14

Elias Ellis and Nancy Ellis sold 70 acres in Mercer Co. on Chaplin for $70. adjoining George Wright at Mercer Co., Kentucky, to Bryant Riley on 10 July 1845. The deed was witnessed by an unknown person .15

Elias Ellis gave an affidavit of age for John W. Johnson when John married Margaret Ellis on 9 July 1847 at Harrison Co., Indiana.16

Elias became a widower when Nancy Ellis died on 6 March 1850 at Harrison Co., Indiana, at age 43.17,18

He is a farmer and has real property valued at $2500 and personal property valued at $300. Also enumerated were George Ellis, John Ellis, Tabitha Ellis, Matilda Crayden and Bryant Ellis.23

     Elias Ellis bought the following tract of land to wit: Section 19 in Township 68 N of Range 17 W containing 160 acres all of which lies in the County of Appanoose at Appanoose Co., Iowa, from Jonathan S. Shupe and Rhoda Shupe on 30 November 1860. The deed was witnessed by an unknown person .24

Elias Ellis is head of household on the Census of 25 June 1880 at Caldwell Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa, as Elias ellis. He is a 77 year old farmer. He was born in VA. as were both his parents. Also enumerated were Matilda Ellis.27

Elias Ellis and Bryant Ellis and Millard F. Ellis were neighbors on 25 June 1880 at Caldwell Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa.28

Elias Ellis died on 18 September 1881 at Caldwell Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa.29,30,2,31,32 He was buried at Oakland Cemetery, Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa.33
