'Mother Connie' nurtured leaders
Letters to the Editor
Published February 6, 2005
Longtime St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce executive Connie Hiskey passed last month, and I did not want her passing to go unmentioned in your pages.
While Connie performed many tasks for the chamber, she was most famous for overseeing Leadership St. Pete. This program, begun in the early 1970s, has produced some of Pinellas County's top business, government, social, arts, legal and religious leaders.
When these leaders were accepted into their respective Leadership St. Pete classes, one of the first people they encountered was "Mother Connie."
She watched over "her" class every year while not treading on the volunteer planning committee, made up of LSP alumni. She made sure there was always a head count, and gamely did the annual Tallahassee trip with each year's class, worrying, I'm sure, whether this would be the year we would leave a class member behind not due to an election. She made it a point to get to know each of us, and treated each of us as though we were part of her family.
Connie's attention to detail, insistence on professionalism, and unique sense of humility and humor were as much a part of the learning experience for us young "future leaders" as the formal programs and "important" speakers. While the Leadership St. Pete program will continue to be one of the most successful such programs in the nation, producing graduates who will go on to give back to their communities in so many ways, we should never forget the woman who helped create such a legacy.
Connie, I know you're with the Lord now, and I hope you at least give him a break about wearing his name badge! Thank you for all you gave us.
-- Robert Eschenfelder, president-elect, Leadership St. Pete Alumni Association, St. Petersburg.
