     George Ellis was born on 16 March 1848 at Morgan Township, Harrison Co., Indiana.3,4,5,6 He was the son of Elias Ellis and Nancy Gritton.1,2

George Ellis moved with family to Iowa. Moved from Iowa to Blue Lick, Saline County, MO by wagon. Crossed Missouri River on ferry at Miami, Mo.

George Ellis was a Union veteran of the Civil War. The family record states he enlisted and served in Co. L (Johnston Battery) 1st Regiment and Co. A Consolidated Detachment 1st Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry Volunteers. The June 1890 Census of Surviving Soldiers, Blackwater, Saline County, Missouri lists George Ellis, Federal (Vol US) Private Company L, 1 Mo. Cav. Enlisted June 6, 1863. Discharged July 11, 1865. The family record states he enlisted 6 June 1863 at Andrew Co., Missouri. The Certificate of Service from the War Department gives the dates of service as 6 June 1863 to 11 July 1865 on 6 June 1863 at Andrew Co., Missouri.4,7

George Ellis was described as 5 feet 6 inches; dark complexion; grey eyes; black hair upon his military enlistment on 6 June 1863 at St. Joseph, Missouri.8

During the Civil War, George Ellis served as a Private in Federal (Vol US) Company 2, 1 Mo. Cav. He enlisted June 6, 1863. Discharged July 11, 1865. at Nelson, Saline Co., Missouri.9

George Ellis married (first) Amy Elizabeth Parker, daughter of Job Parker and Mary (?), on 20 November 1863 at Lexington, Lafayette Co., Missouri, when he was 15.10,11,12

George Ellis is head of household on the Census of 11 July 1870 at Salt ? Township, Saline Co., Missouri, as George Ellis. He is shown as age 24, a farmer, and born in Indiana. Also enumerated were Amy Elizabeth Parker, Albert Ellis and Charles Robert Ellis.13

George Ellis is head of household on the Census of 21 June 1880 at Marshal Township, Saline Co., Missouri, as Geo Ellis. He is listed as a white male, age 50 and born in Missouri. He is a farmer.. Also enumerated were Amy Elizabeth Parker, Albert Ellis, Charles Robert Ellis, William Edward Ellis, Mary Ellen Ellis, Theodore Ellis and Walter Ellis.14

George applied for a military pension at Saline Co., Missouri, on 31 January 1889.15

George Ellis was listed as the head of household as George Ellis on the 1900 Census recorded 13 June 1900 at Salt Fork Township, Saline Co., Missouri. The official date of this census was 01 June 1900. He was born in Indiana in Mar. 1848. He is age 52 and a widower. His parents were both born in Kentucky. He is a farmer and can read, write, and speak English. His owns the farm which is mortgaged. Also living in the household were, his son, Jermie Ellis, his son, Clarence Ernest Ellis, his son, Walter Ellis , his daughter, Ethel Lee Ellis, his daughter, Jesse May Ellis.16

George Ellis lived in Lexington, Lafayette Co, Missouri, on 25 March 1902 according to the obituary for his brother William Morrison Ellis.17

George Ellis married (second) Frances Emma McCollister on 5 July 1904 at Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa, when he was 56; she was the widow of William McCollister.18,19,4,20,21

George Ellis was listed as the head of household on the 1905 Iowa State Census at Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa. Also living in the household were Frances Emma Ellis, Laura B. McCollister and Ina Mary McCollister.22

George Ellis is head of household on the Census of 21 April 1910 at Vermillion Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa, as George Ellis. He is shown as a white male, age 62 and born in Iowa. It has "M2" in marital status which is believed to indicate the current marriage is his second marriage. The number of years married is shown as 5. Place of birth for his father is shown as Virginaia; "Un." for his mother. He is a farmer and owns the farm which is mortgaged. He can read and write. It shows "UA" for the question about service in the Union or Confederate Army or Navy.. Also enumerated were Frances Emma Ellis, Laura B. McCollister and Ina Mary McCollister.23

George Ellis was listed as the head of household on the 1915 Iowa State Census at 1st Ward, Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa. His name as shown on the census was Geo Ellis. His age is shown as 67 and his occupation is retired. He was born in Indiana. His father and mother were both born in KY. He can read and write. He is married and owns his own home which is valued at $2500. He is a Methodist. His military service was with the Mo. Cavalry, 1st Regiment Company L..24 He and Frances Emma Ellis were living in 1919 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.4

George Ellis is head of household on the Census of 14 January 1920 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, as George Ellis. He is shown as a married white, male, age 71 who was born in Indiana. He owns the home and it is mortgage free. He could read and write. His occupation was shown as "none.". Also enumerated were Frances Emma Ellis, Laura B. McCollister and Ina Mary McCollister.25

George Ellis and Frances Emma Ellis celebrated George's 80th birthday with a large gathering of Civil War veterans on 17 March 1928 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.26

On 25 August 1928 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, Frances Emma Ellis was named as George Ellis's wife in George's will. Charles Robert Ellis, William Edward Ellis, Theodore Ellis, Walter Ellis, Clarence Ernest Ellis and Jermie Ellis was/were named as George Ellis's son in George's will. Ethel Lee Adams and Jesse May Marcum was/were named as George Ellis's daughter in George's will. Lura Ethel Ellis, Clara May Ellis and Amy Belle Ellis was/were named as George Ellis's grandchild in George's will.

In providing for his descendants, he left his son Charles Robert Ellis One ($1.00) Dollar in cash, daughter Jessie Marcum Six Hundred ($600.00) Dollars in cash, and Two Hundred ($200.00) Dollars in cash each alike to the three children of his deceased son William Edward Ellis, as follows: Lura Ethel McFaffen, Clara May Daniels, and Amy Belle Miller.

His remaining children, Theodore Ellis (1/5), Ethel Adams (1/5), Clarence E. Ellis (1/5), Jermie Ellis (1/5) and the children of Walter Ellis (1/5), deceased, each received one-fifth (1/5) of the remainder of his estate.27

George Ellis is head of household on the Census of 15 April 1930 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, as George Ellis. He is a white male, aged 82. He was born in Indiana; both his parents were born in Kentucky. He owns the house which is valued at $4000. He can read and write. He was first married at age 15. His occupation was shown as farmer retired, but marked out and retired inserted. Also enumerated were Frances Emma Ellis.28

George Ellis died of bronchio pneumonia, 24 March 1931 at U. S. On 10 April 1931 Frances Emma Green was named as George Ellis's wife in George's obituary.29
